Improve your paddle technique
How To Glide Better Through The Water.
We’ve come up with a few ways for you to be able to improve your paddle technique that may come in handy.
First, we thought about grip.
On a Kayak make sure both your hands are shoulder-width apart, slight bend and knuckles facing the sky.
On a paddleboard put one hand on the top handle and one about a quarter the way down the paddle.
Posture, Posture, Posture.
Engage your core by sitting upright and if you are standing on a paddleboard have your feet hips-width apart.
The Forward Stroke.
This is the powerhouse stroke for kayaking.
Reach forward with the blade, immerse it fully in the water near your toes, and pull it back alongside the kayak. Rotate your torso and use your core for added power. On a paddleboard, the forward stroke involves reaching ahead, submerging the blade, and pulling it back alongside the board. Keep the paddle close to the rail for a more efficient stroke.
The Sweep Stroke
Perfect for turning and manoeuvring, using a wider arc.
For kayaking, extend your paddle away from the kayak, submerge the blade, and sweep it in a wide arc towards the stern. On a paddleboard, the sweep stroke helps in turning by extending the paddle out to the side and making a wide sweeping motion.
The Draw Stroke
Great for moving your kayak sideways or pulling yourself toward an object. For kayaking, reach out to the side, submerge the blade, and pull it towards the kayak, keeping it parallel to the boat.
On a paddleboard, this stroke can help you adjust your position or change direction by pulling the water towards the board.
I hope I’ve taught you some things you may not of known and can now impress your friends and family with your paddle tricks and techniques.
